The Dragons of PernMUSH and their Clutches

Note: Several times in the text below, I make mention of the 'move to Telgar', particularly in reference to riders becoming NPCs. These are riders who, during the move, stayed at Benden rather than move to Telgar. The story is explained in the intro to the clutch of Kimbrith and Parth. Old riders are those that were created as too old to hold flights, ride Fall, participate in flights, etc; they were to add flavor. Regular riders are created less frequently, but are essentially already-matured rider characters, rather than going through a weyrling period. The major difference between regular riders and owner-created dragons is that regular riders are created by the Weyrleaders after discussing it with the player, or whatever, while the owner-created dragons were created in the dawn of time by the riders, while Pern was just barely starting up.

Some dragons have transferred to PernMUSH from other MUSHes; those are indicated as transfer in. Transfers require that the MUSH be in the same timeline (10th Pass, with Thread Falling I think), I believe; I'm not entirely sure. If you have a dragon on another MUSH that you want to transfer in, ask the Weyrwoman and Weyrleader of the Weyr you want to end up at for information.

The first clutch on PernMUSH was at the only Weyr in existence on the MUSH at the time. The others were waiting on having builders, and queens, and stuff, as far as I know. And, yes, there were two golds in this clutch. Benden and Ista were both supposed to open, and golds were needed for them; the first two clutches both had golds, and a gold was created, as well (Wirenith).

Lynna, Lanth's rider, was involved with Sh'dow for a while. When Lanth died/Lynna gave up the character, it ended up as an interesting display to a new rider (me). Sh'dow was a wizard at the time, and S'rtan, Talieneth's rider (played by Malachite, MasterMiner) managed to irritate him a fair bit. Sh'dow, without thinking, @dest'd S'rtan. This led to all sorts of interesting politics.

This was the Hatching that happened on the day of Daylight Savings Time, and half the Candidates didn't show up on the right hour. So someone who was playing a pregnant character, Kailyn, was asked to have her give birth in the Stands while they waited an hour, to give people something to RP about. Also, they Impressed Shadow, a Lord Holder, rather than the intended Impressee, Natol, his son.

The beginning of the Ista Line. This is a fun one. Iliana, Wirenith's rider, got murdered sometime that evening, after the Hatching was over; the murderer was a drudge, possibly Thenomain.

Meanwhile, there were all sorts of other interesting problems, I've been told, such as a copper dragon. Also, I've been told, the queen (which is to say, Aurith, not Maylith) was about to be Impressed to a male. Sh'dow came flying in on Kereneth and more or less dumped Sheanna on the egg, and the Impression was made a good bit more properly than to a male.

Erydenth, who I believe was the copper dragon, was called, by the wizards, a sickly bronze, and died soon after the Hatching. R'ken also transferred south, did some weird timing around, and came back to NorthCon and Ista to die in early January, 1992 (while Miritha was a Candidate, or a night or two before she was chosen as a Candidate, I forget which).

Here, we have Altianath, the senior Fort gold, being flown by the brown, Trebarth. Trebarth's rider, D'rek, wasn't allowed to be Weyrleader, so D'nal, Minayth's rider, acted as Weyrleader. D'rek, I believe, died while Miritha was a weyrling; I remember very clearly it hitting Miritha very hard because it was a brown, and she too young as a rider to be used to it. Also, there wasn't Thread then, so there were less in the way of deaths ICly.

Anlin didn't have names chosen for the dragons until the middle of the Hatching itself, so she made them up on the fly.

Deirdre did lots of stuff, so it's all coming out here: she was AWLM at Fort, then co-WLM when I got exiled to Vermont for several months. Similarly, twice at High Reaches she was AWLM and became WLM when the WLM of the cycle couldn't continue for various reasons. She transferred to Igen after C'trel's Horvath flew Lemarath, as his Weyrsecond and then as Acting Weyrleader until Lemarath's flight with Mileketh, whereupon she was made Weyrsecond by C'rys. After some few months of that, she transferred to Honshu.

Now, here's my favorite clutch, not surprisingly. After all, this is the one Miritha Impressed in.

This flight took place only days after D'vin's class graduated to full rider status. At the flight as a spectator was Arianna, who gave birth that night. I remember this because Miritha assisted. Anyway, D'vin won, to no one's surprise, and became, at the ripe old age of something like twenty, Fort's Weyrleader. Ambar had come from Ista to take the senior Weyrwoman position, since no one else at Fort was doing anything at the time. In return, a gold from this clutch was promised back to Ista - Mirth.

So Mirth went to Ista after she graduated. L'sar and Miritha both became wingseconds, and eventually Miritha became weyrlingmaster. I wrote up this long application for what I'd do with the candidates, including text for most of the lectures. I still have that. It's become a historical oddity. And, yet, a lot of the basic precepts have come down. (I was the first person I know of to make such an application/detailed lesson plan, and also the first one to make the lectures easily available just by parenting off an object I'd created. Lots of people used my speeches nearly verbatim for years.)

This clutch was the one that caused all sorts of restrictions on weyrlings at, essentially, all Weyrs. Like, no visiting dragons. We got into a lot of trouble on the second night, counting the Hatching as the first night, that we were weyrlings. That is, K'tur, Miritha, and L'sar did. It was, however, great fun. I'll post something about it some day, on my main page.

This is the clutch that opened Igen Weyr. As things were done then, a Weyr was built by the Weyrleader who would be leading it. The gold then got transferred in, and there was a mating flight, and the builder won, and everyone knew he'd win. That pattern got changed for High Reaches, but was still in effect here.

Because Iriniath is of Benden, and Pyreth was at the time also theoretically of Benden, I tend to consider Igen at this time as a continuation of the Benden Line. After a few more clutches, they became their own, independent line, but I still regard the Igen Line as an offshoot of the Benden Line.

Here came some politics. Mirth had already flown, I believe, but Ista had some politics going on which lead to Sheanna, Aurith's rider, declaring another senior flight and going ahead and doing it. She chose to let Kereneth win again, but boy, there was some irritation there. At any rate, because both queens had flown so close together, they decided to do the clutches together, Aurith's and Mirth's; each one clutched four PC eggs.

When planning for the opening of High Reaches, it was decided to do things differently than before. The goldrider would build the Weyr, and then would choose who she wanted for Weyrleader, rather than being forced into her choice. Chana, formerly a journeywoman herder and now the most junior of Ista's Weyrwomen, was chosen, through an application process, to take the senior position (and thus do the building) for High Reaches Weyr. This flight happened after she'd finished the building, I think, although it might've been not-long-before.

This is the beginning of the High Reaches Line, but I think it's pretty obvious why I look at it as an offshoot of the Istan Line, since Melirth and Zienth are both Istans. Not only that, but the first one to come from outside High Reaches to mate in was Cyrseth, who was of Ista. (He was out of Mirth by Tevrath; Mirth, of course, was half-Istan, half-Benden, by lineage, Hatched at Fort, and Tevrath was Benden. Nevertheless, their progeny were Istan, particularly since Mirth had never truly been from Fort, promised away before Hatching as she was.)

Elisa took over in the end of the summer, at the latest, from Amberyl, as senior Benden Weyrwoman. I don't know when she'd transferred to Fort, but it was back before clutch 8 (Dec 8, 1991) as I knew of her as from Benden when I started.

Here's another one I have a History with. These were Hatched while I wasn't able to access the 'net. When I came back, early in January of '93, they were still weyrlings and Ambar was killing off her character, leaving Shallana as senior Weyrwoman and Miritha as her Acting Weyrleader, D'vin having returned to Benden when Ambar died.

They didn't, naturally, hit it off at all well, the weyrlings and Miritha. Miritha was never a very formal person, but she did insist that the weyrlings give her the same respect they'd give any random Weyrleader; she wouldn't promote one to full rider (R'then) until he saluted her.

The real problem was T'lor, Brolth's rider. He had a definite fondness for the Lady Holder of Ruatha, who had no husband - to the point where she was pregnant by him. He brought her to his weyr, without telling anyone, some months before she was due. When Miritha found out, she was furious, and ordered him to return her to her home. And there, the matter twisted, until T'lor learned, from his talks with Miritha, that what was important was not his personal feelings but the Weyr. It turned him cold and efficient, and she regretted the result while being glad he had figured it out. He went to Igen, before Brolth flew Zaerith some time later. M'gan gave him a thin thread slice from the brown of his Fort knot to weave into his Igen knot, as a reminder that he was always welcome there.

By the time of this clutch, Sheanna had long since stepped down in Gwyneth's favor as senior Weyrwoman of Ista.

One of the weyrlings out of this clutch, Jazmyn and Kyralth, decided to try betweening it without permission, since Jazmyn had, she said, been taught by Kerolth's rider, R'ken. She jumped to the Fort Bowl, and then back to Ista again. At the time, Miritha was Fort Weyrleader, and so I had to deal with the fallout from that side. Her weyrlingmaster, and the wizards, declared that Jazmyn must have died, since she wasn't really trained, on the second jump. After some debate, they relented.

There was, surrounding this clutch, a good bit of political maneuvering. Krystlin, the senior Weyrwoman, had decided that her Weyr was mostly dead (which it was) and that she needed nine, not eight, eggs in her next clutch. Eight was the maximum allowed at the time by the Weyr Council; the wizards stayed out of such things, as there wasn't as much of a crunch and the world was being reasonable, anyway. However, High Reaches objected to the ninth, causing all sorts of storms and political fury in the closed meeting of the Weyr Council - the Weyrleaders and senior Weyrwomen. Eventually, it was all settled, although I'm not sure that High Reaches at the time was very happy with it.

By this time, of course, Kyriath was dead, and D'vin and Kedranth had returned to Benden, giving up Fort Weyrleadership to return home.

For several weeks approaching the flight that would choose Fort's new Weyrleader, Shallana and I talked about all the bronzes available. It was a time in which there were, for the five Weyrs, few that were considered viable candidates for Leadership. Most of the bronzeriders of the time wanted, not Leadership, but just to sort of quietly stay in the background, it seemed. In fact, general opinion was that there were no more than five bronzeriders of both quality and willingness to be Weyrleader, leaving only one per Weyr.

So we debated, and all that. Also, the Weyr Council met a week or so before the flight, and I convinced them to rule that a brown could fly in, but not win, a senior queen flight; before that, browns were forbidden from flying. (I used the argument, among others, that that doesn't make sense; why would browns rise only for junior queens but not for senior ones? Do their hormones and instinctive responses to a proddy female just shut off suddenly when a queen becomes senior?)

We didn't announce that ruling publically, although I did send around +mail to all the brown riders to notify them of it privately and invite them to show up if they wanted to.

The flight was on April 3, 1993. There was a Gather in the afternoon at Lemos, and Shallana and Miritha went to it. Shallana would go into a Crafttent, Miritha would follow her in, and Shallana would be tactless at the Crafters, then leave. Miritha would smooth it over, saying that Astarith was proddy, then go out and track Shallana into the next tent to repeat it again. It was great fun. Finally, though, Miritha persuaded Shallana to go back to Fort.

There were various IC and OOC problems around the flight. Miritha, for instance, fought Farlioth when he wanted to rise, and continued fighting him the entire flight, to the point of near collapse on her part and a badly mistimed try at Astarith on his. Vorinth won, and that caused a miscarriage of M'gan's child that Darci of High Reaches was carrying at the time.

Though C'trel's Horvath flew Lemarath in a Weyrleadership flight, he was already back at Fort by the time Astarith's clutch Hatched. His chosen Weyrsecond, Deirdre, rider of green Kolith, was by then Acting Weyrleader. Miritha refused to acknowledge it, which created all sorts of interesting friction. The matter of Deirdre as Weyrleader came up before the Weyr Council, where most of the Weyrs present came to various decisions regarding it: Weyr autonomy, why not, etc. Finally, she was accepted (by, as I said, everyone but Miri, which only affected their personal relationship).

There was a furor about Talth, when this flight happened. People thought he was still a weyrling. So at Weyr Council - which happened the same night - Miritha, as Weyrsecond of Fort, stood up and said firmly that both Ileara and B'dan had graduated a few sevendays before; there had been no formal ceremony or notice because the Weyr had been waiting for their clutchmates to also be ready. That didn't really help, but B'dan was having enough problems, and I didn't think adding cries of `he's too young' to it would help much.

Cinne wanted to have 15 eggs in this clutch. Boy, did that set some people off, me among them. Fort was pretty inactive, but that wasn't going to be the way to go about it. Now, my real problem with it was just that it would be hellish to try to be WLM to them. I wasn't the WLM, but I've been one before, and I know how it goes. It's painful in the extreme, let me tell you. Eight or maybe nine is about the upper limit I'd want. Fort's WLM at the time agreed with me.

This clutch was the last at Benden Weyr. During the clutching cycle, it was discovered that Anne McCaffrey believed that PernMUSH had known it couldn't have Benden Weyr or Ruatha Hold - while the PernMUSH wizards had believed from the beginning that Anne's permissions had given the MUSH that privilege. After a few exchanges, it was decided that Benden Weyr would be abandoned as a PC Weyr, per Anne's instructions. (She does not allow fan groups to use Benden Weyr or Ruatha Hold.) So, this clutch is the last to have Hatched at a PC Benden Weyr. Benden riders moved to Telgar Weyr.
