GarouMUSH

GarouMUSH, the strictest of the places I've ever played, is a place many call elitist. It's certainly restrictive in the character creation process: a background is required that usually is a few pages long, but for some characters reaches to hundreds of lines. Players are expected to know why their characters are in the area, what motivates them, what their general background is, and be able to set those forth in writing. The reasoning behind this is that it gives characters a much stronger three-dimensional feeling right from the start, and that if you cannot write about it coherently, the odds are good that you may not be able to RP it coherently, either. (I know; some people beat the odds. We all understand that.)

Because of these standards, the RP tends to be fairly good - not always stellar, but usually not worse than mediocre. Certain other policies lead to that, too: players, once they get through the app process, are considered to be clued enough to handle most conflict resolution on their own - clued and, most of all, mature. Combat rules start with the two, or more, players involved working things out and only slowly get around to calling on a wizard or other player to GM it - usually, the process doesn't even get that far, and the two players can work it out themselves.
